This is the last weekend before the 2008 Whitetail gun hunting season here in New Brunswick. All bets are on for the biggest antlered animal harvested from the camp this year. A few years ago, the winner was not really gloating with his small 7 point buck. Not to worry this year, the signs are there, well if you plan on eating track soup.
One thing I have learned along the years is to concentrate your efforts in an area where signs are prevalent. If you want to get the big antlered buck, you have to go to HIS hangout. There are telltale signs like rubs and scrapes along his routes, especially during the rut.
One sign that will improve your results, is the trail that leads from the doe bedding zone to the feeding ground. Watch the cover edges bordering these trails. The weary buck will watch from a distance until the estrus draws him in the open.
Like us, deer also have a big head and a small head, but can only use one at a time, hehe!
The signs are less visible this time of year as the falling leaves do cover deer tracks and even some of the pre-rut scrapes. Look for browse and try to find the high spots where deer may bed down to chew the cud. You can be sure that the dominant whitetail buck is in the nearest thicket watching over his harem.
Look for parts of the deer or small movements. You seldom see a whole deer in the woods until it's too late. That's when the doe flag gets your attention while the buck is watching you watch the doe parade.
Look, look, look. The definition of hunting is: Looking for something to shoot.
