Moose season gone, Deer season coming soon!

The barbeque will not run out of propane cooking moose meat this year. I did the math, no license, no moose. Maybe I'll get my dog a Medicare card and apply for the 2009 moose hunt just for the fun of seeing what happens.

Two of my hunting buddies got lucky enough to get a buddy tag and they both got lucky enough to bag a nice young bull. I already ate my steak, that's just part of the fun and camaraderie of hunting.

Now the small game season opened in New Brunswick and that will get my engine revved up. A walk in the woods, the smell of decaying leaves, the sound of the wind moving what is left of the leaves on the trees. This is the prequel of what is to come.

Deer season always starts on the fourth Monday of October in New Brunswick. This year, we will be allowed to hunt on Sunday as well. This is great for hunters that don't have the luxury of vacation time. The more time you spend in the forest, the better your chances are of at least seeing the mighty elusive Whitetail Buck.

I'll take time this year to venture in some of my old haunts to see what the time has done to the clear cuts that devastated my original hunting grounds. I can visualize all the moments and the exact location of all those fine whitetail bucks I was lucky enough to harvest during those first 20 years.

My finest memory of this area was the time an 8 point buck snuck up on me to watch the commotion I was infringing on their territory. I was eating an apple, all the time scanning for any movement. My peripheral vision picked up something on my left, each time I took a bite of my apple. This buck was hiding behind a fur tree, and when I took a crunching bite, it would peek over for a second and hide again. This went on until I finished eating. I never did get a shot at this buck, but I will never forget the feeling of wild wonder.

I totally respect this wild animal. They are creatures that have adapted to our ways, but they don't know we have guns!!!

Get outdoors with your friends and family and enjoy what the sport of hunting is for you.
